Dr Martijn Willemse is the associate professor within the research group Inclusive learning environments. He is member of LessonStudyNL and a former Vice-Chair of the Dutch Association for Teacher Educators (Velon) and former Chair of the European Association for Practice-based Research in Learning and Professional Development (EAPRIL).

Research focus

Martijn Willemse primarily focuses on teachers’ and (teacher) educators’ professional development towards a diversity of topics, such as citizenship education, collaboration with families, SWPBS, conducting practice-based research, or participating in Lesson Study. In addition, he has a strong interest in (inclusive) research methodology, particularly that of practice-based research.

Education

Martijn Willemse studied Clinical Child and Adolescent Studies (Orthopedagogy) at Leiden University, specializing in learning difficulties. He graduated with a research project on reading interventions for students with dyslexia. In 2006, he obtained his PhD at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam reporting about the moral and pedagogical dimensions of teacher education and teacher educators’ practices.

Research Experience

At Windesheim University of Applied Sciences he conducts research together with (international) colleagues on establishing inclusive education and leaning environments (at all levels), inclusive methodologies, including (teacher) educators’ professional development.
