Marike Hettinga is a professor of IT Innovations in Health Care. She has a multidisciplinary background, which she applies in leading the research group. Multidisciplinary collaboration and research increase the chances of structurally embedding IT innovations in Health Care.

Research Focus

Professor Marike Hettinga's research focus is on multidisciplinary issues related to the design, development, integration, financing, and scaling of digital health care.

Interface between users and technology:

  • Research into user needs and the conditions required for implementation
  • Translation of user needs into technical requirements
  • Research and guidance on the implementation of IT in health care organizations
  • Experimental and evaluation studies on the use of telehealth

Education

She earned her engineering degree at the University of Twente, where she combined Computer Science with the advanced study of Philosophy of Science, Technology, and Society. Before becoming a researcher, Hettinga spent three years (1994–1996) as a lecturer in multimedia at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in Leeuwarden. During that time, she also obtained her first-degree teaching qualification at the University of Groningen.

Research Experience

Since the fall of 2008, Marike Hettinga has been a professor of IT Innovations in Health Care. Until June 2010, she combined this position with her role as a scientific researcher at Novay (formerly the Telematics Institute) in Enschede, where she had been working since 1997. In 2002, she earned her PhD at this institute with a study on changes in communication patterns and workflows following the implementation of videoconferencing for oncological teleconsultations.

Since her PhD, she has focused as a researcher and project manager on the intersection of IT and health care. She is particularly interested in applications that support remote collaboration between medical professionals, as well as telehealth solutions for patients and clients.
