Dr Jooske van Busschbach is a professor of HumanMovement, Health, and Well-being at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. Her research group maintains a strong connection with the Psychomotor Therapy program.

In addition to her role at Windesheim, she works as a researcher and staff member at the Rob Giel Research Center, part of the University Center for Psychiatry at the UMCG in Groningen. Her research focuses on the effectiveness of psychomotor interventions in mental health care, exploring how movement-based therapies contribute to psychological well-being and recovery.

Research Focus

Dr Jooske van Busschbach specializes in research on the effectiveness of psychomotor interventions in mental health care. She continues the research line established by former professor Ruud Bosscher, which explores the relationship between body experience, movement, health, and well-being. Her work aims to deepen the understanding of how physical activity and embodied experiences contribute to mental and emotional recovery.

Education

Dr Jooske van Busschbach studied Clinical Pedagogy at Utrecht University. In 1996, she earned her PhD with the dissertation "Uit het oog, uit het hart?" ("Out of Sight, Out of Heart?"), a study on the stability and changes in personal relationships. She conducted this research as a PhD candidate at the Interuniversity Centre for Sociological Theory and Methodology (ICS) at the University of Groningen.

Research Experience

Since 1994, Dr Jooske van Busschbach has worked at the University Center for Psychiatry (UCP) of the UMCG in Groningen. Before that, she held positions at the NIVEL (Netherlands Institute for Health Services Research) and the Trimbos Institute.

Since June 1, 2012, she has combined her role as Professor of Human Movement, Health, and Well-being at Windesheim with her work as a researcher and staff member at the Rob Giel Research Center (UCP). This research center focuses on the efficiency and effectiveness of interventions in psychiatry, aiming to improve mental health care through evidence-based psychomotor therapies.
