Dr Ivo van Hilvoorde is a sports philosopher and serves as an assistant professor at the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He combines his work at the VU with his role as a professor of Human Movement, School and Sport in Zwolle.

His research focuses on philosophical, historical and pedagogical questions in the fields of sports and physical education, exploring how movement and sports contribute to personal development, education, and society.

Research Focus

Within the research group, Van Hilvoorde conducts and supervises research on physical activity and sports behavior, particularly in the context of schools and sports clubs. His work focuses on areas such as motor learning, the use of innovative and digital technology in physical education, and the relationships between physical education, (school) sports, and the school environment.

Education

Ivo van Hilvoorde studied Human Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in sports philosophy.

Research Experience

Van Hilvoorde has extensive experience in scientific research at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Maastricht University, Utrecht University, and the Mulier Institute. He has conducted research on the impact of new technology on sports and has published on topics such as fair play, doping use, the role of sports in experiencing (national) pride, fitness, and physical inactivity.
