Dr Evert-Jan Velzing is a professor of Urban Innovation at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences in Almere.

Research Focus

Together with researchers and students, he works on inclusive and sustainable urban development, aiming to strengthen the economic, social, and ecological connections between all stakeholders in urban environments. Innovation plays a key role in this process, and his research focuses on how urban innovation can contribute to neighborhood development. Central to his work is understanding the value of innovation for residents, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and social organizations.

Education

Evert-Jan Velzing studied Natural Sciences & Innovation Management at Utrecht University. In 2013, he earned his PhD from the University of Amsterdam with a dissertation titled Innovatiepolitiek (Innovation Politics), in which he examined the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs’ industry and innovation policies from various perspectives.

Research Experience

Evert-Jan has worked as an organizational consultant, lecturer, and researcher specializing in sustainable innovation. In recent years, his research has focused on sustainability in construction and industry, circular business models, the transition to circular supply chains, and innovation policy.

He previously served as a senior researcher at the Centre of Expertise Smart Sustainable Cities and the Building Future Cities research group at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences. In these roles, he led research projects and contributed to curriculum development for various bachelor's and master's programs. He also taught in the Technical Business Administration bachelor's programme and the Next Level Engineering master's programme.
