Dr Alie Weerman is a psychologist and professor of Mental Health Care and Society. She combines scientific knowledge, practical-professional expertise, and lived experience, conducting mainly participatory action research at the intersection of psychiatry and society. She creates unconventional practical connections across formal systems, often using artistic (art-based) methods.

Research Focus

The research focus of the professorship is on practical, ethical, and theoretical issues regarding the integration of mental health care into the social domain. Alie Weerman works closely with the people at the heart of these issues. She collaborates with creative, practical, and engaged researchers, trainers, and artists. Some of the researchers also have lived experience.

Education

Alie Weerman studied Work and Organizational Psychology and the Philosophical Foundations of Psychology at the Vrije Universiteit, earning her master’s degree cum laude in 1988. She has lived experience herself and obtained her PhD cum laude in 2016 on the topic of Peer-Experienced Care and Service Providers. In her dissertation, she presented both a practical elaboration and a scientific-theoretical foundation of experiential expertise.

Research Experience

Alie Weerman worked for a year as a researcher at the Vrije Universiteit and then, due to her own experience as a psychiatric client, became a supporter of a patient council in a psychiatric center. As a freelancer, she carried out various projects in the fields of client participation and social work. Since 1990, she has been a lecturer (and later a researcher) at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences.

She has authored over 40 publications in professional journals on psychiatry and addiction, as well as six (study) books in this field. She developed the Mental Health Care specialization (GGZ-agoog) and the Peer Expertise specialization within the Social Work program.
